Day Nineteen, and Some Thoughts about Days of Rest

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I had a great time sprinting yesterday morning with several of you–it felt great to be back at my writing work!!

Sadly, the day job will continue to kick my rear until Tuesday, as I struggle to make it through my (slowly shrinking!!) skyscrapers of papers to grade. I know I won’t be making my Festival goal for this week either, but I’ll be shooting into high gear as soon as my grades are turned in.

Which brings me to (paradoxically or otherwise) to the idea of Days of Rest. It’s Sunday today, the traditional Christian sabbath. I’ve always loved the idea that Judaism and Christianity have as a central tenet that people should pause from their normal work once every seven days and devote themselves to a different pace and a different mode of thinking.

I know many Festival participants have built days off into their goal system, and there’s great wisdom in doing that. Sometimes you need to step away, recharge, look at the bigger picture. If you DIDN’T build any time off into your goal system, and you’re starting to feel a bit of fatigue, go ahead and revise your system. It’s not cheating–it’s a healthy part of the process.

Day of rest or otherwise, how are you all doing today?

  1. I took my day of rest yesterday, then did double today as I wrote almost 3k to get past the doubt demons and press on to the end. I’ve decided to take your advice Elisa, and just finish. I can then write a synopsis, apply plotting tools, and come up with a better editing plan. And maybe, just maybe, it doesn’t suck as bad as I’d thought. I think I needed that day off to get past it though. Watched a lot of Castle last night with DH which helped chase out some of the cobwebs. I think I’m about 7 scenes from done. Definitely in the last 10k for sure now. I’m hoping to be done this week.

I took a nap today. Then dug into more revisions. 1 point so far today. The guys are at a hockey game, so I should be able to edit one more chapter tonight, at least. I realized I have my love scenes in the wrong order and need to push the later one farther towards the black moment. I dug out my Margie Lawson notes and am trying to remember to apply what I learned.
